Files Kindle Fire Recognizes

Kindle Fire supports multiple file types that are free of digital rights management software. These types of files may be transferred to your Kindle Fire via USB:

Documents: AZW, AZW1, TXT, MOBI (unprotected), PRC, DOC
Audio supported within Music: AAC LC/LTP, HE-AACv1 (AAC+), HE-AACv2 (enhanced AAC+), AMR-NB (.3gp), AMR-WB (.3gp), MP3, MIDI, Ogg Vorbis (.ogg), PCM/WAVE (.wav)
Images: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP
Video: H.263 (.3gp, .mp4), H264 AVC (.3gp, .mp4), MPEG 4 SP/ASP (.3gp), VP8 (.webm)

Mobipocket files that have Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection applied are unable to read on your Kindle Fire. If you purchased a Mobipocket file from a Mobipocket retailer, you will not be able to open the file on your Kindle Fire.

EPUB ebooks are not supported on Kindle Fire.

Transferring content via micro USB

Once you've connected your Kindle to a computer with a USB cable (sold separately), your Kindle will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear. For Windows users, this is typically in the "Computer" or "My Computer" menu. For Mac users, the drive will appear on the desktop.
Open the Kindle drive; you will see several folders inside.
Locate the downloaded file and drag and drop it into the applicable content folder, such as Video, Music, or Pictures.
Safely eject your Kindle Fire from your computer and unplug the USB cable.

Your content will appear within the corresponding content library on your device:

Books will appear in the Books library.
Personal documents will appear in the Docs library.
Music will appear in the Music library.
Pictures will appear in the Gallery app.
Videos will appear in the Gallery app. Note that videos transferred via USB will only be available in the Gallery app. Only videos from the Amazon Video store are shown in the Video library.

Remember: Your Kindle Fire will only recognize transferred files if:

File types are listed under Files Kindle Fire Recognizes below.
Files are transferred to the correct folder for their type.
Files are free of digital rights management software.

Wireless File Transfer

To transfer files wirelessly I use 2 apps both free 1 on the kindle fire ,File Expert

by Xi'an Geek on Amazon to FTP files to and from the kindle. FE has a nice simple user interface it allows you to copy, paste, delete and more from the app, on the kindle menu you can make new folds and more. Start FTP by going to Share my Contents start share via FTP.

After you start FTP you will get a pop up

now this is where are second app 2 comes in File Zilla client from http://filezilla-project.org/ this is installed on your pc.

At the top you will see 4 boxes host: 192.168.1.1 or whatever your address is, then user and password, that the kindle displayed earlier and the port is the 2211 the last 4 numbers at the end of your address after the (:) hit Quick connect. After you type all this in once it is saved so next time just open File Zilla and hit quick connect button after starting ftp on the kindle. Now you can drag and drop files both ways, delete, copy, move, create new folders on your kindle from your pc.

Don’t forget to turn off File Expert it likes to stay running in the background if don’t exit.

XP Hyper Terminal

If you just can’t live without the original HyperTerminal in Windows XP, you can actually extract two files from your XP installation and copy them over to Windows 7 or Vista.

The two files you will need are hypertrm.dll and hypertrm.exe. Simply copy those files into any directory on your machine and it will work. You should be able to find hypertrm.exe in C:\Program Files\Windows NT and hypertrm.dll in C:\Windows\System32.

If you have the Windows XP CD, you should be able to find both of these files in the i386 directory on the CD.

Convert .MOD video to .MPEG

On the Panasonic SDR-T50 Video camera I have encountered the .MOD video file format, witch is not popular with many video editing software programs, with a little testing I found there is a simple fix. I think this is a better solution then converting the .MOD to a usable format and loosing some quality of the video.
1. insert memory card into your computer and locate all folders that containe these Exsentions (the last 3 leters in the file name)

MOV00A.MOD
MOV00A.MOI

or

MOV001.MOD
MOV001.MOI

The .MOI is a index file accompanying the MOD video file format used on many camcorders, such as the Canon FS-100 SD-card camcorders,JVC Everio, and the Panasonic D-Snap SD-card camcorders. and is not important to this tutoral. They are not needed for what I'm showing here they are for the camera only. Copy all folders that have the .MOD files to the Local Disk C

2.Download Flexible Renamer this will allow you to do many things, for this perpose we are just going to use it to change the file exstintions that we need. Unzip the file and open Flexible Renamer.exe
A.) In the left pain go to Computer or My Computer > Local Disk C > for me it was SD_VIDEO > PRG001 to PRG005

B.) in the Menu box to the right you will see Modify Extension click the small drop down arrow and select Replace Extension.

C.) type the Extension you want to change in this case MOD in the SrcString box, and what we want it to be MPEG in the DestString box click rename once then click ok , your Done.

Now you can use them in any editor of your choosing.

If you would like to join the videos together,I did because I had many small clips. I used CombiMovie.exe combine two or more mpg/mpeg files into a single continuous mpg movie. It uses the copy method and therefore works very fast, almost as fast as copying the files it self. CombiMovie is easy to use, just select the files to be joined and start the joining process. It offers a built in preview window that allows you to preview the parts before joining (or after).

This tool helps you to close all running applications with one click. It does not use system resources because it only flashes a “close” signal to all open windows on the desktop and then ceases. Just place a shortcut to the tool in the Start Menu, Quick Launch or elsewhere.

You can always add a hotkey to this shortcut. It is really very handy if you are running ~20 applications and want them all to quit instantly. It works just as if you were pressing the close button for each application.

Live SkyDrive – How To Set Up As Network Drive via Gladinet

Updated: 3rd June 2009 – to cater for Gladinet moving out of Beta and changed instructions to use the free version with updated screenshots and instructions.

Recently I talked about Windows Live SkyDrive, a facility that allows you up to 25gigs of storage space for free. The storage space is available anywhere and while its an excellent facility, it can get cumbersome dealing with uploading files and working through the web based interface.

Ideally, you want to have a folder structure set up on your computer so that you can just navigate through your SkyDrive just like you do any of your other hard drives. Gladinet is a cloud based service that does just that. It brings online applications and storage to your local machine.

Gladinet is a fully featured service that allows for (amongst others):

Drive “mounting” (act of setting up an online storage like SkyDrive or Picasa or Google Docs as local hard drives)
A Cloud based desktop that enables users to use online applications to work on local files.
Task schedulers to cater for scheduled transfers of data (eg as backup)
Smart file transfers that allows for encryption, compression and reliability.
It allows you to upload images without resizing!! (If you use the web interface to upload images, they get resized automatically – this way it treats image files as data, so SkyDrive doesn’t resize or constrain the image in any way).

What we will do today is use Gladinet to “mount” our SkyDrive so that it is available on My Computer.

Prerequisites

you have an existing SkyDrive account. Easy enough to do if you follow my earlier guide: Microsoft SkyDrive – 25 gigs of space for free!

Step 1

The first step would be to download Gladinet onto your machine and install it. There are two versions available on the website (http://www.gladinet.com): a Free Starter one and a Professional Edition. The Professional Edition is on a limited introductory offer, but as it costs money, I will use the free version You can download either of them on the following page: Gladinet Editions Download Page. There is a version for both 32bit and 64bit operating systems (sadly no Linux).

Step 2

Once downloaded, complete the installation process. Select all the defaults (you may wish to change the install location, but apart from that, all else should be as normal).

When you launch the application for the first time, you’ll have an initial “Run Once Initial Settings” for the Cloud desktop.

Here, choose a drive letter that you want to assign to Gladinet and hit OK. In my case I chose “R” as my drive. Leave everything else as is and hit OK.

Important!

If you are running a server operating system (or one which has IIS running), you may get a message that states that Port 80 is being used already. It will ask to install a virtual adapter. Click Yes.

At this point, the Gladinet Virtual Driver will be installed.

If you continue to have an issue installing the virtual adapter, there is a troubleshooting guide in the install folder\WosHome called “GladinetTroubleShoot.pdf”. It may help resolve issues around Gladinet behaving with applications that also use Port 80 (such as Skype or IIS).

In my case, I changed my unassigned port on my local web server to port 81 and it worked fine. There are ways to preserve port 80 and have Gladinet coexist with your web server. Its detailed in the Troubleshooting guide.

Step 3

Assuming you have any possible conflict resolved, Gladinet will start. You can tell from a taskbar mini icon it will place on your start bar and it should show you an initial menu screen.

Click on “Mount Disk Storage or Web Storage As Virtual Directory”

Step 4

This will open up the Virtual Directory Manager.

As we’re adding SkyDrive, select “Windows Live SkyDrive” as the Service Provider.

The dialog box will change slightly to collect your SkyDrive credentials:

At this point you can create a “safe card” (refer to Gladinet for details) or just type in your SkyDrive credentials and click on Add.

Your username is your Windows Live Id (usually same as your MSN Messenger or Hotmail Id)

It will take a while to create the virtual directory and progress will be shown at the bottom of the screen. You may get a “Loading Online Storage Plugin” agreement dialog box. Hit Yes to this.

Step 5

Once its finished, a new Windows Explorer window will open up and show you the contents of your SkyDrive!

At this point you can navigate through the folders just like any other folder on your computer. If you happen to close your Windows Explorer, opening up My Computer later will show you the drive under Network Location (Vista) or Network Drives (Windows 2003).

You can also open up your drives by right clicking the Gladinet mini icon and selecting your drive

Via the same method, I managed to add Google Picasa as well as Google Docs to Gladinet as well.

When you drag a file into your SkyDrive, (if you chose the professional edition), you will be asked if you want to upload immediately or schedule it for later. Additionally, right-clicking on an “office” type document will display and option to read it in an appropriate viewer.

Conclusions

As a simple drag and drop access to your online storage, it does what’s asked of it. It gave me a network drive that allowed me to access my online data stores and i can easily upload and download documents to and from my drives.

Currently, its one of the best ways to really make use of SkyDrive without having to go through a web explorer.

You can continue to explore Gladinet on your own by right clicking its mini-icon and checking out the various options.

If you like keeping a clean desktop, then even having the Recycle Bin icon sitting there can be annoying. By placing a shortcut on your taskbar, you will have easy access while keeping it off of your clean desktop. This recipe adds the shortcut to the Taskbar instead of pinning it to the Windows Explorer icon.

1. Right-click on your Desktop.

2. When the context menu appears, mouseover New and select Shortcut.

3. The Create Shortcut window will appear, input the following into the Type the location of the item textbox:

4. Click the Next button.

5. Input a name for the shortcut, such as Recycle Bin or Trash.

6. Click the Finish button.

What's Different

Traditional antivirus products for PCs rely on multiple, locally installed technologies to intercept each file at different layers. The scanning is enabled for entry vector, file system and execution processes.

Traditional antivirus products scan these layers using antivirus, heuristics, intrusion prevention and behavioral analysis modules. This approach process results in heavy usage of local PC memory and CPU resources, thus impacting the computer's performance.

Panda's new approach uses the thin-client agent for on-access, asynchronous cloud scanning. This strategy combines local detection technologies with real-time cloud scanning to maximize protection while minimizing resource consumption. The model blocks malicious programs as they attempt to execute, while managing less dangerous operations via nonintrusive background scans.

"Protection from the clouds is much better. Performance on the computer is not impacted," Santana said.

Collective Intelligence

The company is counting on the free download of Panda Cloud Antivirus even after the beta phase to build a database of malware activity. Panda's proprietary cloud computing technology, called "Collective Intelligence," aims to harness the knowledge of Panda's global community of millions of users to automatically identify and classify new malware strains.

It takes the technology less than six minutes to scan each new file automatically received into the collective from users' computers, according to Panda. Collective Intelligence servers automatically receive and classify over 50,000 new samples every day.

Panda's Collective Intelligence system also correlates malware information data collected from each PC to continually improve protection for the community of users.

Dual Methods

Panda's technology blocks malware at the execution stage. That accounts for the economy of performance, Santana explained.

When users are not connected to the Internet, a local cache continues to provide protection to the computer. Since 95 percent of all computers are infected only while connected to the Internet, there is no inherent risk when the cloud application is not available, according to Santana.

Panda Cloud Antivirus includes local and remote antivirus, antispyware, antirootkit, heuristics and goodware cache.

Offline Functionality

Not having full antimalware functionality when not on the Internet should not be a concern, according to Dana Gardner, principal analyst at Interarbor Solutions.

"The offline cache does quite a bit of checking," Gardner told TechNewsWorld. "Something new can only cause an infection when the computer is connected to the Internet. So that doesn't concern me."

The amount of added protection available while offline could be a distinguishing factor between the free version and the professional-strength paid version, he noted.

"It's an innovative product. I'm intrigued by the use of the user network to build the signature base," he said.

Money Stream

Offering the free version is clearly a twofold strategy, according to Santana. One reason for doing it is to advance the name brand in the U.S.; the second is to ensure a maximum pool of users connected to the Collective Intelligence database in the cloud.

"I haven't convinced my board that Panda is a nonprofit organization yet," Santana quipped. "We aren't as well known by less-savvy consumers in the U.S. Offering the free version will help improve that."

Keep Those Drivers Fresh

ExtremeTech and lots of other Web sites have published quite a few bytes of copy about how drivers for Vista are premature at best. Graphics drivers, especially, are hurting in terms ofefficiency and stability. It's likely that the biggest boost you're likely to see will come in gradual increments as AMD, Nvidia, and other companies work out the wrinkles that prevent their hardware from performing at peak under the new OS.

The first step in optimizing Vista, then, is to keep your drivers up to date. Check for new drivers for all of your hardware often—daily, even. Not only can new drivers enhance performance, they should also gradually enable more features. We're still waiting for better video quality from AMD's ATI cards, for instance, and for a full feature set for Creative Labs' SoundBlaster X-Fi cards.

Lose What You Don't Need
If you installed Vista yourself and have experience installing previous Windows OSes, you surely noticed that Vista hardly asks any questions about your computer—and what you plan to do with it—than did prior OSes. Windows Vista makes all kinds of assumptions about your computing habits and the features you may or may not need, and it inevitably installs some overhead that you simply don't need. You can get rid of it. Windows XP had the Add/Remove Windows Features button in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs applet, and Vista has something like it.

Open Control Panel and click Uninstall a Program to launch Vista's Uninstall or Change a Program Window. In the Tasks pane on the left, click Turn Windows Features On or Off.
Check the list of features. Each feature is preceded by a checkbox which, if filled, indicates the feature is installed. If you hover the mouse over a feature, a help tooltip appears to tell you what it is.
Do you really need Windows Meeting Space or Tablet PC components?
Uncheck any feature you don't need. Some of the features are headings with a sub-list below them; just click the little + sign to expand.

For my gaming system, I've purged everything except:

Some of the games
XPS Viewer (under .NET Framework 3.0)
Remote Differential Compression (a network optimizer)
Windows Ultimate Extras

Note that when you uncheck features, you're not removing these features from your system; you're simply turning them off so they don't sit in the background eating up resources. You can turn any of them back on by invoking this window and filling the checkboxes.

Lose What You Don't Need, Continued

Next, it's time to flush any services that you don't want or need.

Click the Start button and type in services.msc and hit Enter. (The cursor jumps to the Search bar in the Start Menu when you click the Start button; you can usually just punch in whatever program or module you want to run right there).

The Services applet appears. Each service is basically a little nest of software support code for something the computer can monitor or do.

Well-written services include a description of what they do (note that lots of third-party services don't include a description, to which we say: shame). The Status column in the Services window shows whether or not the service has been started. Startup Type means how the service starts:

Automatic means the service starts when Windows starts.
Manual means the service starts when Windows detects that something needs it.
Disabled means the service doesn't start at all.

Most services are either set to Automatic or Manual. There's no need to change any manual services; they only start when it's necessary for them to do something. There are probably some automatic services you really don't need, though. You can find a full list of services at TweakHound, an excellent source of all kinds of tweaks.

To change how a service starts, right-click it and click Properties. If you don't want a service to load, first stop the service by clicking Stop. Then, pull down the Startup Type list and set the service to Manual or Disabled.

If you're not sure about a service, it's safer to set it to Manual; that way, if something calls it, it should start up. If you know you don't need a service, set it to Disabled.

The services you need depend on what you do with your PC. For instance, if you're not using ReadyBoost, you can disable that service; you can disable Windows Error Reporting if you don't want to report errors; you can disable Tablet PC Input Service if you don't want to use Tablet PC features; and so on.

You can almost certainly disable some services that start automatically by default:

Some services that you absolutely should not disable include:

Feel free to experiment with services; just keep track of which services you tweak and, if something doesn't work, re-enable the last service you turned off. Streamline the system by shutting down as many services as you can, based on your own unique needs.

As an example, here are the services I've disabled on my networked gaming machine:

Hose Out the Background

For the most streamlined operation, it's essential that your computer has as few programs running in the background as possible. You can tell a bit about how much junk is running behind the scenes by looking at the system tray (the area next to the clock on the taskbar). The more icons you see there, the more stuff is running that you may not actually need.

I recommend a two-step process for getting rid of any background applets that you don't need. Check out the tray icons and use the interfaces from those programs to disable them natively. Then, run good old MSCONFIG to clean out anything else.

First, look at the tray. Some of the stuff there belongs there; you might see a little speaker icon, a battery power icon, an icon for the Sidebar, network status icons, and a few other odds and ends that Windows puts in the tray. Look for third-party icons; in the picture shown here, QuickTime and Steam occupy parts of the tray.

Some of those programs don't have to be there.

Right-click on any icons you find that aren't simple Windows status icons. Look for a settings, properties, or a similar option. Then, in the resulting window, look for a way to prevent the program from loading when Windows starts. For example, to prevent Steam from automatically loading, you would:

Right-click the Steam tray icon.
Click Settings.
Click Interface (see the screenshot below).
Uncheck Run Steam When Windows Starts.
Click OK.

Quicktime, however, presents a challenge. You can tell it not to display the tray icon, but it will still run in the background. For that, and other programs that don't always display tray icons, use the second method.

Hose Out the Background, Continued

Click the Start button, type msconfig, and hit Enter.

You'll see the System Configuration window, which operates essentially the same as it does in Windows XP. Click the Startup tab.

Look at the list of startup items. Each is preceded by a checkbox. You can prevent any of these programs from starting simply by unchecking it.

You'll note that QuickTime, which wouldn't let me disable it through its interface, is there. Simply uncheck it to prevent it from running in the background—and sucking up resources.

Steam, QuickTime, and many other such programs will start automatically when they're needed. For example, if you launch an MOV file, QuickTime will start whether or not its little applet is running in the background. Steam will launch if you start a Steam game, even if it's not running behind the scenes.

Now, some items are necessary. You might see things like a mouse or gamepad applet that's the hardware needs to offer its programmability. You might see Windows Defender, which, if your computer has constant Internet access and lacks another anti-spyware program, could help protect it.

Here's a good rule of thumb: If an application in MSCONFIG references hardware, you should keep it. If it references software, get rid of it (unless it's a vital security program). Hardware applets often supply needed front ends; software applets usually help a software program open faster. Software opens just fine without helper applets, so there's no need for them to suck up processor cycles all the time.

When you've cleaned out the list, unchecking anything you don't need, restart the computer.

Use ReadyBoost

ReadyBoost is a Vista feature that uses a compatible USB flash device to enhance performance. Note that the oft-misunderstood feature isn't a replacement for a memory upgrade, and it doesn't affect game performance—you won't see higher frame rates by adding a keychain drive to your system.

ReadyBoost caches disk reads on the fly and can often speed up data access. Reads from a USB key or other ReadyBoost device are much faster than random reads from a platter on the hard drive. ReadyBoost data is encrypted, so if someone swipes the flash device he or she can't tell what you've been up to. It's secure, and it really does speed up access in certain instances.

To enable ReadyBoost, just plug in a flash device (Microsoft recommends one about the same size as your system's main memory. For instance, if you have 1GB of RAM, grab a 1GB ReadyBoost device). The system will automatically detect the drive and offer to use it either as an external drive or as a ReadyBoost drive. Simply choose the latter, and a window like the one in this screenshot will appear.

You can change the amount of memory on the device is used for speed. Windows will recommend the amount it can use with the most efficiency. Click OK and you're done.

Adding a ReadyBoost drive isn't like doubling your system's memory, but the performance benefits are well worth the price of a USB flash device.

Speed Up the Interface

Windows Vista features what some of us think is the prettiest GUI in the OS industry. Its stylish transparencies and nifty animations—driven by Direct3D and your graphics card—give it a polished look that's a pleasure to use.

Unfortunately, that shiny, new interface, called Aero, is also a resource hog. If you're running Vista on a PC that's near or just above the system requirements, you might want to shut off some or all of those features.

Here are some actions you might want to take to tweak interface niceties:

Lose the transparency. Right-click the desktop, click Personalize, and click Windows Color and Appearance. Uncheck Enable Transparency. Click OK.
Get rid of the Sidebar. It's cool, but some of those gadgets chow down on memory. Right-click the Sidebar, click Properties, and uncheck Start Sidebar When Windows Starts. Click OK. Then, right-click the Sidebar and click Close Sidebar. If you ever want it back, you can simply click the Start button and key in "sidebar" and hit Enter.
Get rid of some of the visual effects. Open Control Panel, click Performance and System Tools, and click Adjust Visual Effects. In the resulting window, you can uncheck line items for animations, fades, and other effects; or simply click Adjust For Best Performance.
Go with a non-Aero theme. To get rid of Aero entirely, use the Windows Classic, Windows Vista Basic, or Windows Standard theme. Right-click the desktop, click Personalize, and click Windows Color and Appearance. Click Open Classic Appearance Properties... and choose a theme in the Color Scheme list box. Click OK.

Use a non-Aero theme to cut down on the GUI's use of resources.

When you perform such tweaks, Windows Vista won't look as pretty. It will, however, respond much faster. A high-end system might not benefit a whole lot from these adjustments, but they'll improve low-end computers in spades.

Miscellaneous Hacks

Next up are a few hacks I've come across in my travels. The first is for systems that have an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with a reliable battery attached.

If your system is equipped with a serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive, go to Device Manager (the quickest way to do that is to click Start and punch in "Device Manager" and hit Enter). Expand the Disk Drives entry. Right-click on your SATA hard drive and click Properties. Click the Policies tab, and click Enable Advanced Performance. This option enables extremely aggressive write caching, which can speed up drive access but also cause you to lose data if the power goes out suddenly.

A couple of tweaks require you to hack the registry. To do this, click the Start button, type regedit and hit Enter.

Note: You should make a backup of the registry before you alter it. Click File, click Export, and in the resulting window, make sure All is selected at the bottom. Give the file a name and click Save. This will create a full backup of your Windows registry; if you accidentally hose something, you can go into Windows Safe Mode and restore it. Alternately, you can create a Restore Point before you alter the registry; go to Control Panel, then System and Maintenance, and then System. Click System Protection in the Tasks list. Click the Create... button, and follow the prompts.

I recommend two registry hacks for minor performance gains. First, turn off the low disk space checks:

Using the left side of the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
Right-click in the right pane and select New Key.
Name the new key Explorer.
In the Explorer key, right-click in the right pane and click New DWORD (32-bit) Vaue.
Name the DWORD NoLowDiskSpaceChecks.
Right-click the new DWORD and click Modify.
Set the Value Data to 1.
Click OK.

This will prevent Windows Vista from checking the space on your hard drive and popping up the notorious "Hey, you're running out of space!" warning balloon.

Next, you can probably safely disable the NTFS habit of creating 8.3 versions of filenames for backward compatibility. DOS is dead, right?

Open the Registry Editor and:

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
Find the DWORD called NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation.
Right-click it and click Modify.
Change the value to 1.
Click OK.

You should reboot after you alter the registry.
